The sun was warm, the sea breeze gentle, and every corner seemed to hide a whitewashed street with flowers spilling from balconies. It’s a place that mixes the charm of a Spanish seaside town with just the right amount of glamour. Over time, I’ve discovered the best things to do in Marbella, from slow mornings at a café in Plaza de los Naranjos to long afternoons on the beach and evenings watching the sunset over Puerto Banús. I get it why people keep getting back to it.
How to Get to Marbella
Getting to Marbella is very easy, no matter which direction you are coming from.
By car: Marbella is located just off the A-7 and AP-7, the main motorways crossing Costa del Sol. If you are opting to drive, Marbella offers numerous underground car parks in the city centre. Alternatively, you can find free parking near the Palacio de Congresos, a bit further from the city centre.
By bus: The easiest way to reach Marbella without a car is by bus. When traveling by bus, keep in mind that fast buses will take you directly to the Marbella bus station, which is a half-hour walk from the city center. On the other hand, slow buses typically make stops downtown as well.

The old town of Marbella is small but charming. Get lost on the maze of narrow alleys paved with cobblestones, between white buildings decorated with blue flower pots or pink climbing bougainvillea.

Throughout the year, the Old Town comes alive with cultural events and festivities. From traditional flamenco performances to local festivals, there’s always something happening that showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The church is large, with three naves separated by semicircular arches over pillars and a semicircular apse. It has a contemporary golden altarpiece with the statue of Saint Barnabas, the patron saint of Marbella, in the middle. The church also houses a significant 1975 organ, regarded as one of the most important organs built in Spain in the last century.
The building’s facade features a Rococo door made from ochre stone and a tall tower with two belfries, each with a ceramic spire on top.
Ermita de Santiago
The Ermita de Santiago is a charming small church located within the Old Town. It was originally built in the 15th century, which makes it the oldest religious buildings in Marbella. You can’t miss it, as it is located in Plaza de los Naranjos and has a beautiful painted façade.

The Alcazaba of the Medieval Medina of Marbella is a significant historical site that offers insight into the city’s history. Originally equipped with ten towers, today only one tower remains, while the rest of the wall has integrated into the town’s modern architecture.
During its construction, the builders repurposed materials from old Roman buildings, including the Ionic Capitals visible on the top of the remaining tower, Torre de la Pólvora.
Visiting the Alcazaba allows visitors to explore Marbella’s history and envision the events that once took place within its walls. While not as widely recognized as some other historical sites, the Alcazaba in Marbella holds its own charm.
